{"id":550,"date":"2008-09-28T18:48:08","date_gmt":"2008-09-29T01:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/norwitz.net\/blog\/?p=550"},"modified":"2008-09-28T18:48:08","modified_gmt":"2008-09-29T01:48:08","slug":"multnomah-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/norwitz.net\/blog\/2008\/09\/28\/multnomah-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Multnomah County Central Library (Portland, OR)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lived in cities with large central libraries before (like Boston) but the locations I&#8217;ve lived recently tend to have smaller ones (with access to more books via inter-library loan).\u00a0 Portland has one of those old-fashioned but refreshing monuments to reading.\u00a0 A library where you actually want to spend time, not just kill it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.multcolib.org\/agcy\/cen.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Multnomah County Central Library<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n801 S.W. 10th Avenue<br \/>\nPortland, OR 97205<br \/>\n(503) 988-5123<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Three floors of book collections.\u00a0 Grand old staircases (and an elevator).\u00a0 And a children&#8217;s room to die for.\u00a0 This place is bigger than some local branch libraries I&#8217;ve been in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_551\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-551\" class=\"size-full wp-image-551\" title=\"portland_library_childrens_2673\" src=\"http:\/\/norwitz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/portland_library_childrens_2673.jpg\" alt=\"Children's room at the Portland OR Central Library\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children&#39;s room at the Portland OR Central Library<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multcolib.org\/kids\/tour\/arttree.html\" target=\"_blank\">bronze tree<\/a> marks the front desk and it&#8217;s a beautiful sculpture (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.multcolib.org\/kids\/tour\/ctpo2.html\" target=\"_blank\">more pictures<\/a>).\u00a0 The wood wall to the left leads to a playarea\/mini theater.\u00a0 The tables have puzzles on them.\u00a0 And the rear room stretches back further than the picture.<\/p>\n<p>As you can probably guess, I spent most of my time in the children&#8217;s section, but the rest of the library was just as spacious.\u00a0 The bathrooms had some light scent but were quite usable.<\/p>\n<p>Right in front of the library, on SW 10th Ave, there is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandstreetcar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Portland Streetcar<\/a> that runs often and is free in the immediate downtown area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lived in cities with large central libraries before (like Boston) but the locations I&#8217;ve lived recently tend to have smaller ones (with access to more books via inter-library loan).\u00a0 Portland has one of those old-fashioned but refreshing monuments to reading.\u00a0 A library where you actually want to spend time, not just kill it.
